This week we had the opportunity to attend Microsoft Future Decoded 2018 and have come away with a mind-blowing view of the future. With incredible first-hand insights into technology concepts such as Intelligent Cloud and Intelligent Edge, as well as emerging technologies like Quantum Computing and DNA storage – it’s been exciting to hear directly from a rich mix of keynote speakers like Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft Corporation), Cindy Rose (CEO of Microsoft UK), and Michael Wignall (CTO for Microsoft UK) about the potential that AI holds for us all.
Cindy Rose tells us that at Microsoft, it is their mission to empower every person and every organisation on the planet to achieve more. And in the case of AI, that means helping UK organisations harness its potential both successfully and responsibly.
Speaking at the event and launching a comprehensive report into Maximising the AI opportunity, Dr Chris Brauer, from the Institute of Management Studies at Goldsmiths University explained that 41% of organisations say their business model will cease to exist within the next 5 years – and that this presents an exponential issue. UK organisations using AI perform 5% better than those not using AI – and so, the race has begun with organisations that have adopted the use of AI already outperforming those that have not.
Dr Brauer went on to say their research indicates that 51% of business leaders do not have an AI strategy – this drops down to 5% for the community of organisations that have not yet adopted AI but a third of business leaders of large organisations are not yet even thinking about using AI at all. For these organisations the message is clear – no strategy, not thinking of using it and already behind the curve – if you have not adopted AI and don’t have a strategy, then in a years’ time (more likely sooner), there are going to be implications.
The good news (contrary lots of conversations around job losses, the implications of these technologies and fear in the workplace etc) is UK workers are optimistic about the potential to use AI at work, with 59% of employees being open to experimenting with AI at work, and 39% seeing its potential to streamline bureaucracy and routines within their roles, freeing them up to focus on the things they really want to work on. And more than a quarter of employees believe AI will create new jobs and industries.
